Leonardo da Vinci masterpiece goes on sale at Christie's – as contemporary art

Work painted 500 years ago and discovered in 2005 to be star item in a New York sale otherwise made up of postwar and contemporary art

It was hailed as the greatest artistic find of the past 50 years, a masterpiece disguised behind amateur layers of paint and found festering in obscurity at a regional art auction.

Now, for the first time since its rediscovery in 2005, Leonardo da Vinci’s Salvator Mundi is to be be put up for auction at Christie’s in New York on Wednesday.
