Jamaat leaders cannot contest next polls: EC

Election commissioner Mahbub Talukder yesterday said Jamaat-e-Islami leaders would not be allowed to take part in the next parliamentary polls.

If any Jamaat leader wants to contest as an independent candidate, the Election Commission (EC) will take the final decision after investigating the candidate. Jamaat leaders wont be acceptable in the elections, he said.

He said this to journalists at his office in Election Bhaban in the capital. The registration of the Jamaat was cancelled by a High Court order on Aug 1, 2013, for opposing the independence of Bangladesh. Many Jamaat leaders faced trials and were convicted by special war crime tribunals. Many of its top leaders were executed for committing crimes against humanity in 1971.

As Jamaat has lost its registration with the EC, the party would not be able to take part in the next general elections. As a result, its leaders would not be able to take part in the elections with the party symbol. Jamaat leaders,
