Only president can enjoy indemnity: HC

The High Court (HC) yesterday made seven observations in its verdict on the Supreme Court (SC) administrations letter to the Anti Corruption Commission (ACC) about retired Appellate Division judge Zainul Abedin, saying that none but the President could enjoy indemnity. The bench of Justice M Enayetur Rahim and Justice Sahidul Karim made the observations while disposing of a rule it had issued earlier seeking explanation as to why the SC administrations letter to stop the probe into the graft allegation against Justice (retd) Abedin should not be declared illegal.

The HC bench said the SC administrations letter could not be considered as the official opinion. In fact, the letter had tarnished the image and dignity of the highest court as no one is immune from criminal prosecution, the HC bench observed.
